We’re bUILDING a Curling CENTER IN Traverse City
The Traverse City Curling Center will be a 28,000-square-foot, curling facility located at the northwest corner of Garfield Road and South Airport Road in the Cherryland Center (in a federally designated Opportunity Zone). With 5 sheets of regulation curling ice and spectator viewing, the Curling Center will be host to numerous events, including regional tournaments, and USA Curling sanctioned competitions.
Matching the excitement across the nation, local curling clubs are popping up around the region and growing in membership and popularity. The Curling Center would become a home to local clubs and players. The Traverse City Curling Club is currently at full capacity due to current ice availability. The Curling Center would offer a large, dedicated indoor ice arena, where curlers can practice, play and compete year-round.
To advance the sport of curling in our region, dedicated “curling specific” ice is needed. Unlike multi-use ice rinks, curling ice is covered with small water droplets that create the pebbled surface allowing the rocks to slide down the ice. Sweeping the ice melts these frozen pebbles and can change the distance and trajectory of the stone. Curling ice must be very level to optimize the strategic nature of the game.
Although the Scottish sport of curling has been played for centuries, it is currently the fastest growing winter sport in America. With the U.S. Men’s Olympic Team winning a gold medal in 2018, enthusiasm for the sport is rapidly expanding and we certainly understand why. General participation in curling requires ordinary athleticism and minimal equipment. Additionally, adaptive techniques and equipment can be used to engage curlers of all ages and abilities. Curling invites anyone to become an athlete and to experience the connection, competition and support that comes along with a team environment.
